This term is used to describe the effects of discontinuing anti-psychotic medication after being used for a long period of time for treatment of psychosis. It relates to only a particular type of medication and when a patient is being withdrawn, they need medical supervision. Other medications can counter the symptoms.

firstly the medication can only be stopped if the doctor thinks you no longer need it.
if it is stopped by the patient then the illness will get worse and there may well be violent out bursts.

the doctor will reduce the dose very slowly because of the with draw symptoms.
the doctor will probably prescribe a different medication to stop the side affects of coming off the tablets.and to ensure the illness does not come back worse than it was.
the medication is strong it is not a mere sedative.

some antipsychotics can give extra pyrimidal side effects if you stop them quickly. these might include, depending on the tablets or jab, shakes, feeling very tired, involuntary movements.. some people experience a relapse psychosis if they stop anti psychotic medications suddenly. i've seen a couple of people really ill after stopping clozapine quickly- more ill than they were before the meds.
