I am British and still have my English accent.
An American at my club recently said that it was inappropriate for me to teach English because I had a "funny accent".

I felt like asking, "What have you got against real English?" but that might have been rude.

Dear d.j. You couldn't be more wrong, and cruel. I live in Mexico because I am too poor to live in my own country. I wish I did have a home, even a $20,000 one.
I can't even afford to buy clothes, and as for all those things I've accumulated, the only thing of value I have is a small Persian rug.
I have time because I'm retired. And my English is very clear and easy to understand by anyone but a moron.

You really must forgive me for laughing... (I'm still laughing); I've never heard something so ridiculous... and that's what I would have blurted out, really. You must live up to your moniker... I wish you had told him that HE had a funny accent, too, and no one was complaining about it.
I've dated two English ladies in my lifetime. One for a few months before she left for England again, and the other for over 2 years (both from London, one from Northern London). I don't understand what is supposedly so funny about the English accent! I find it most sexy in a woman (please forgive me if it offends you to hear this; I mean no disrespect).
Cockney, now there's a "funny accent" if I've every heard one! I also like the very thick Irish and Scottish and Australian accents, too. But, to see those old David Niven movies... and his crisp accent and his debonair mannerisms! Or Richard Burton (although he was really Welsh) who was one of the top three best English speakers in the entire world! I do enjoy seeing Sean Connery more today that he's older than when he was "007" and his (Scottish-English) accent!
Well, if you speak with a Cockney accent (" 'ear now, mate") I can understand "funny accent" but if it's ENGLISH... than tell that old goat to take a flying leap or to go play in traffic!
I would certainly encourage you to go ahead and teach English! Hey, it'll give you something to do and you will also improve your Spanish, too. Go for it, and live up to your moniker (rouse them from complacency and inspire learning). Best wishes, always!

Do it, it is a great opportunity! Just understand that most Mexicans wanting to learn English are going to be using it with Americans. So if I were you I would try and stay away from English slang and incorporate American instead. Accent doesnt have much to do with it, explain that you are English to the students.

Absolutely. I know a guy in Mexico DF whose English instructor was German...this guy speaks English with a heavy German accent, and a secondary Mexican one. He's still understandable. Also, most people use a variety of sources (multiple teachers, tv, etc) to learn their second language, so your students won't necessarily ONLY pick up your accent.
Go for it! I hope to do likewise myself some day. Don't listen to Americans...we're ethnocentric buffoons!

Depends on how strong it is as to why they said that. Or if they were just trying to get your dandruff up. I have an English friend and often have to ask her to repeat or explain what she meant and I've know her almost five years.
Besides, how would you find the time with all that you say you do? Why would you want to go to Mexico after having such an active and prestigious life here? Would you take all your computers with you and what would you do with all your precious things you have accumulated? One being your recently acquired $500,000.00 home?
Your a fake and have nothing better to do with your time. You get your glory on this site to feel better about yourself? You need a real life.

Who cares about the English accent.
If you want to teach English in Mexico, then go.
My second cousin from Brazil went to England to learn English. I know he will drive me crazy with his new accent, but I admire him doing something.
