I would like to work in microfinance. This is an organisation like the Grameen Bank (just got the Nobel Peace Prize) that lends money to people in developing countries so that they can start their own businesses and improve their quality of life. Can anyone suggest organisations like this in the UK?

UK can give you an excellent opportunity in microfinance in terms of policy, planning and assessment levels. However, since you said you were inspired by grameen bank, I assume that you want to work more on the grass root level.

Organizations/ people you may want to explore in UK would be

The Institute of Development Studies, Sussex: You can talk to Mr ANTON SIMANOWITZ (a.simanowitz@ids.ac.uk) at Imp-Act, Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex for ideas
You may also visit www.microfinancegateway.org or www.cgap.org to see whats going on in microfinance in UK and worlwide.
You may also try EDA (UK) [Ms Frances Sinha]. It does a lot of good work in India, bangladesh, Myanmar, Cambodia, Afghanisan and many other south asian countries through its group companies M-CRIL and EDA - India - both based in Delhi, India.

Pure Microfinance organization experience will also do a lot of good to you. InBangladesh apart from GM you have BRAC. In India you have BASIX, ASA, CASHPOR, IASC, VSSU. In Afica you have Micro-save Africa.

So go ahead take your pick weather you want to be in grass root or at a policy making/ consulting/ assessment level - and take the plunge.

Wish a great career in Microfinance. Its a great place to be in !

I assume you are interested in microfinance in the developing world.

Here is an international list of microfinance providers, as compiled by the UK-based Alternative Finance project. Most of them are based overseas (unsurprisingly), but I did notice that DFID, the Department For International Development, got a mention.
