She is looking at big college campuses only in large cities. I know everyone says the college must "suit them" and I agree. However, she is not that outgoing , can be a little shy and I think a smaller campus might be best. We get along fine but she is a teenager and I am a Mom..:-), if I recommend one ..I KNOW it will only mean the kiss of death, before she gives it a chance....I really want her to have a good , fun and positive experience...Any suggestions ,especially from young people...on what to do?
How would you want your parents to handle this..without making it seem as if they were pushing their own agenda ,not yours!!!

I go to a small school and I think it's the best. I am shy and seeing a lot of the same people has really forced me to be more outgoing. A lot of people say large schools are better due to more opportunities, but that is hardly the case! My school has more organizations that you can imagine. You can also really participate if you want because there are less people competing for the same thing.
The small classes and no TAs really make a difference. My prof. send out e-mails if you miss class or if you're starting to slip. If you don't want personal attention then pick a big school.
My school is also an isolated campus in a city, Memphis, so it's the best of both worlds. You can find other schools like that if you search. I recommend the book "Colleges that Change Lives" by Loren Pope. Check out Rhodes College in there.
If you find a school you like have her guidance counselor suggest it or sign her up for e-mail or letters from the school so she can stumble onto it herself. My mom just told me I would get to miss school to visit so I went!
Hope that helps, but don't worry no matter what your daughter will do fine. Everyone worries way too much about the college process.

I really wanted a big college when I started looking and my mom thought I was too shy, intrapersonal, and self-reserved for such an experience. I visited a variety of college in a variety of sizes just to appease everyone. It turned out to be the best idea. I ended up at a college of only 1200 students right outside a big city (Los Angeles) and wouldn't trade that for the world. It was a small environment but in an area that when I needed the "big city experience" I could have it. The visits really make the difference. When it's right, she'll know, suggest visiting a varity so she can make a more informed decision. Maybe offer to bring a friend of hers along for non-mom input. I wish you luck in this decision!

If she is looking at larger colleges it may mean she wants the experiences you can have at them. With larger colleges there are many more groups that you can get involved with, they have something for everyone. She may have been shy in high school because she couldnt connect with those at her school. I would suggest she live in the dorm her first year though, that will give her a small community inside the college to acquaint herself with. I go to college of 30,000 I love it, there is always something to do as diverse as a poetry reading to a 80's music night or football game.

I was shy too and went to the small college but the truth is many of my classes didn't transfer over and that made me more behind I would recommend that she goes to the big school I did goto a big school and should have went there from day one sure it was overwhelming at first but I got used to it and I loved it so let her go to the big school trust me she will be OK and in the long run it will work out better for her
