And how on earth does a few tablets written in stone get interpreted in different ways by different sects of Christianity. Surely the version in the Jewish holy book must be the right one. There are more than two versions though. What do you think is the deal with that?

Not true... The Catholic version does not mention graven images.

Once again, just because you say something 'authoritatively' doesn't mean squat if it is wrong.

Latin Vulgate
Douay-Rheims Bible

Book Of Exodus
Chapter 20

3 Thou shalt not have strange gods before me. 4 Thou shalt not make to thyself a graven thing, nor the likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or in the earth beneath, nor of those things that are in the waters under the earth. 5 Thou shalt not adore them, nor serve them: I am the Lord thy God, mighty, jealous, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me. 6 And shewing mercy unto thousands to them that love me, and keep my commandments. 7 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain: for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that shall take the name of the Lord his God in vain. 8 Remember that thou keep holy the sabbath day. 9 Six days shalt thou labour, and shalt do all thy works. 10 But on the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: thou shalt do no work on it, thou nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy beast, nor the stranger that is within thy gates.
11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and the sea, and all things that are in them, and rested on the seventh day: therefore the Lord blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it. 12 Honour thy father and thy mother, that thou mayest be longlived upon the land which the Lord thy God will give thee. 13 Thou shalt not kill. 14 Thou shalt not commit adultery. 15 Thou shalt not steal.
16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. 17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house: neither shalt thou desire his wife, nor his servant, nor his handmaid, nor his ox, nor his ***, nor any thing that is his.

The Torah includes 613 commandments, including the ten from the Decalogue. Therefore, when compared to the whole canon of Jewish law, the Ten Commandments are not given any greater significance in observance or special status.

Muslims regard Moses as one of their greatest prophets, but they reject the Biblical versions of the Ten Commandments.
Despite the Ten Commandments not being explicitly mentioned in the Qur'an they are implied by the following translation of verses in the Quran (using Jewish numbering):

"There is no other god beside God."(47:19)
"My Lord, make this a peaceful land, and protect me and my children from worshiping idols." (14:35)
"Do not subject God's name to your casual swearing, that you may appear righteous, pious, or to attain credibility among the people." (2:224)
"O you who believe, when the Congregational Prayer (Salat Al-Jumu`ah) is announced on Friday, you shall hasten to the commemoration of GOD, and drop all business." (62:9)
The Sabbath was relinquished with the revelation of the Quran. Muslims are told in the Quran that the Sabbath was only decreed for the Jews. (16:124) God, however, ordered Muslims to make every effort and drop all businesses to attend the congregational (Friday) prayer. The Submitters may tend to their business during the rest of the day.
"....and your parents shall be honored. As long as one or both of them live, you shall never say to them, "Uff" (the slightest gesture of annoyance), nor shall you shout at them; you shall treat them amicably." (17:23)
"....anyone who murders any person who had not committed murder or horrendous crimes, it shall be as if he murdered all the people." (5:32)
"You shall not commit adultery; it is a gross sin, and an evil behavior." (17:32)
"The thief, male or female, you shall mark their hands as a punishment for their crime, and to serve as an example from God. God is Almighty, Most Wise." (5:38 - 39)
"Do not withhold any testimony by concealing what you had witnessed. Anyone who withholds a testimony is sinful at heart." (2:283)
"And do not covet what we bestowed upon any other people. Such are temporary ornaments of this life, whereby we put them to the test. What your Lord provides for you is far better, and everlasting." (20:131)

While other faiths do not generally recognize the Ten Commandments in their unity, many of them (Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism, etc.) have comparable laws or principles [2]. In atheist Soviet Union the Moral Code of the Builder of Communism had many notions much resembling the Ten Commandments.

In particular, the old commandment prohibiting graven images and images of heavenly things, ran into a major problem once Jesus Christ appeared on earth in a flesh body, which was most certainly the image of a heavenly thing.

With the advent of the new covenant, ALL the old testament laws and statutes expired.

God's new covenant church was given the authority to rule and regulate the new testament faithful, so the Church readopted and readapted some of the old law, particularly the Ten Commandments, to the quite different spiritual realities of the new covenant, and the age of grace.

That old testament version of the commandments is great for study and research, but it has been authoritatively replaced by those you'll find today in the current Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Anyone still using the others may well be exposing themselves to the curse of the old law, which is never a good thing.

Dear eantaelor,

Remeber ALL the english Bible versions are translations from the original Hebrew/Aramaic and Greek Scriptures. I have found and highly recommend the King James version. The trnaslators did an excellent job, however, there are a few verses that could have translated a little better. These are very few in number.
As far as the catholic Bible is concerned, it is a poor translation. It was translated from inferior manuscripts. Many people are falsely lead to believe that the catholic church was in existence from the time of Christ but that is not true. The catholic church arose about 400 years after the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. The catholic church hjas adopted doctrines that are in complete violation of the law of God.

The Catholic commandments contain all the same things that the Protestant ones do, they are simply numbered differently.

The Catholic version DOES mention graven images. It is part of the first commandment, but not always mentioned because it is directly implied in the whole "worship God only" thing.

The ten Commandments are the same and as for the graven images what is it about "Thou shalt not have any other Gods before me" that does not address the graven images issue?

Let me get this straight ... The Catholic Church is non-Christian cult ... the cult which was the only source of Christian truth for 1,000 years after Christ ... the cult which gave us the Holy Bible ... and the only true Christians are the thousands of conflicting manmade churches which are offshoots of the non-Christian cult, retaining many of its cultish doctrines, but also adding novel doctrines that no-one ever heard of until the 16th Century, and which now can't agree on any point of doctrine ... am I getting this right?

There is no different set of commandments for Catholics. they were just numbered slightly differently. They contain the exact same information and instructions. It matters not to me how they are displayed I would just be good if they were kept again by Americans.

Especially "Thou shalt not murder" Our nation had innocent blood upon it's hands and consciences every time a baby is aborted or an old person is starved.

No, there are some translation issues, and there are differences between the commandments when they are written by different religious sects. The tanslations by modern Jews are the most accurate, methinks.

Christians actually have twelve commandments: the original ten, and two given by Jesus.

"Love the Lord with your whole heart, your whole mind, and your whole soul."

"Love one another as I have loved you."

But do you ever hear Christians talking about the Twelve Commandments....?

I didn't think so. :P The most important ones seem to be the most commonly forgotten.

The Catholic church is a non-Christian cult. The Catholic church says Mary was without sin, but God's Word says ALL have sinned. And that is just one example of many.

(the new testiment addsnew commandments from god, but only speaking of the original ten here) and if you belive there were more then you are going against the bible....
