AB LOUNGE!!! I bought one before my back surgery, and its the best thing I could have ever done. I did 200 the first day I got it, and I could feel the tighten muscles, its great! But for best results, use it more than once aweek!
Its alos not expensive for a longterm look.

Those are two separate actions.
You tone up by a general exercise program.
However, building up muscles does not directly affect the fat content. That is resolved by proper diet and the calories that you burn while exercising.
I'd suggest enrolling in an exercise course at the local YMCA. Probably the best are things like aerobics, spinning, treadmill, etc. Bonus points if you get a coach who evaluates your situation, and makes specific exercise recommendations. After you find out what works for you then you buy that equipment (or just keep supporting your gym).
If you just buy the latest stuff on TV then you will have it gathering dust within 6 months, and in a garage sale in a year.

Just buy a set of interlockable weights. What is that? Like less than $40 at your local sporting goods store.
If you have stairs, you can use that with weights in your hands (say about 5 - 10 lbs for beginners, 20 - 30 lbs for intermediate) and do walking lunges on the bottom stair. You can also do walking lunges around the house. You can do squats with it.

It won't make any difference with your weight loss, but the treadmills at the gym might be a better quality. I have a treadmill at home and am completely happy with it. I can exercise any time I want, am not restricted to gym opening times and have my privacy.

If you are going to train at home first thing you want to do is get someone to train with you because it is very hard to train alone when you first start.Next go buy a good pair of running shoes and get on with it,and if your still keeping fit after 12weeks you will know what to buy yourself you wont need me or any one else to tell you what to gym equipment to buy but if you give it up before 12 weeks you got a good pair of shoes out of it.

Anything should work. Try checking the local paper for people selling items or try Play it Again Sports for cheaper equipment. Also walking is easy and very cheap that gives results but maybe not as quick as other equipment.

I lost four inches of my bum and hips and two and a half inches off each thigh in one month with twenty mins a day twice a day on a lateral thigh trainer. You can pick them up on e-bay for around ten pounds plus postage. :-)
