The symptoms of a cold are misery-creating. Medications cannot cure a cold, but there are things you can do and buy that will help. Don't go asking your Doctor for antibiotics, however, unless the mucus (snot) from your nose turnd yellow or green, which indicates a bacterial infection, or unless you develop a cough that, at first, is tight, but, after a few days, produces mucus that is green, yellow of blood-flecked - this would indicate bronchitis.

Bacterial infections that produce green or yellow sputum (spit), Phlegm (coughed-up matter) of similar colour, or colourd mucus from the schozzle will benefit from antibiotics. A cold, as it is, will not, as it is caused by a virus, which antibiotics do not tackle.

To unblock the nose, purchase a product called Otrivine - in its spray form - this can only be bought from a Pharmacy. Vicks do a product called Sinex, that you might get from a late-opening store tonight, which will do the job, but I would not use it more than a few times, as it can set up allergic reactions in some people with frequent use.

Other things that help. Try eating soups - Heinz or Baxters from a can - beef, beef and onion. and leek. If you can cook reasonably well, make your own onion soup, and put garlic in it. Drink oodles of liquids - tea, water, beers. FRUIT JUICE-LEMON OR ORANGE-BY THE PINT!!!

If you like the stuff, Drambuie is sovereign - a wine-glass full, whilst being over the number of units of alcohol recommended, is excellent for a bad cold - the alcohol will cheer you up, and as the drink contains honey and herbs, they will act well against the nose-blocking demons. Honey on toast is good - the sugars in the honey will give your jaded self an energy boost, and the honey itself helps to liquidise sputum.

Above all - STAY AT HOME - as much as you can. Get a pal to nip out to buy your Drambuie.Otrivine, et al. Don't go to work for a few days- if you do, you'll infect the whole place and everyone will be miserable.

Stay off the high-dose analgesics such as Extra-Strength Bloggs's. Ordinary Beechams Powders, or soluble Aspirin, or ok, and may help.

If you've got an appetite, go eat something nice and spicey--preferably something with horseraddish. Try roast beef with horseraddish spread (plenty of it), sushi with wasabi (plenty of it) or hot hotwings (plenty of them and as hot as you can stand).

The spice will clear your sinuses, so be prepared to start blowing your nose. Once your sinuses are clear, take some Nyquil or other decongestant and then rub some Mentholatum under your nose and on your chest. Then call in sick to the next day of work/school and go to bed. Enjoy a nice long rest and you'll feel better in the morning.

Use nigh time NyQuil, take a full cap full and it will not only let you breath, you Will sleep well. This can be found at any drugstore and most grocery stores. I like the green color Best, but any color works. Be sure to get the Nighttime, because Daytime will not let you sleep, but will let you breath. I fill the cap that comes with NyQuil completely full and not stop where it indicates to stop, and I always get unblocked and sleep peacefully also.

Menthol crystals always work for me. Place a couple of menthol crystals in hot, steaming water, your basin in your bathroom is ideal, put a towel over your head and breath in the vapours, it clears my nose, pretty potent stuff!

If you haven't got Menthol Crystals which can easily be bought in Boots, or any high street pharmacy, use steam.

Hope that's helpful! Get well soon!

Try Sudafed, it really stops all that congestion. Breathing steam also works. And try those strips that go over your nose, they're supposed to open your air passages.
