It really depends on the airline that you're flying on and where you are traveling to. I flew on British Airways last December, and had purchased my tickets on-line. The tickets were mailed to me in about a week, and I had to check in for boarding passes at the airport. When I flew to Phoenix last May on Southwest. I purchased my ticket on-line and was presented with an itinerary (E-ticket) to print out and use as the ticket. I had the choice of either checking in for boarding passes at the airport, or I could check in on-line 24 hours before the flight and print my boarding pass at home (which I did).

NWA is pretty much the only airline that operates anywhere near me, and they do this all the time. Particularly since their bankruptcy, they are constantly changing flight schedules--allegedly to save money. A couple years ago I flew out to New York, and the schedule changed seven times between buying the tickets and taking the trip. In most cases the change isn't terribly important (a few minutes here or there). If it appears to give you too tight of a connection in a hub, though, call the airline and see if they can arrange another itinerary. On my trip out east the final schedule change would have made a 30-minute connection in Minneapolis, but they were able to fix it fairly easily. The good news is that Northwest is usually quite generous in the flying time they allow, so you're less likely to arrive late than on other airlines.

Yes unless you check-in online and do not have any luggage to check-in. Just make sure to print everything out and you can skip that whole area. However, make sure when you get to the airport that the Gate has not changed and flights delays will not be reflected on the boarding pass you printed at home. Now if you have luggage to check-in you will still need to go to the check-in area, but I rec commend the e-ticket/internet kiosks. These kiosks are fast and you can check-in your luggage quickly with just you reservation/confirmation number!
