it looked like a bird of prey....it was about the size of a crow but was very pale grey....flying over moorland....any ideas what it was....in the uk

You really need to add more detail such as where (in the UK) you saw the bird, it sounds like a Hen Harrier or a Pallid Harrier as both are uniformly a pale grey. I don't think it would be a Goshawk as they tend to be dark grey

and got some interesting sites. Perhaps you could look at the images and see if you recognize one.

Could be a peregrine (blue/Gray) if there were cliffs or rocky outcrops nearby, could be a sparrow hawk or a Merlin, or even a Buzzard at a distance. Where in England were you at the time?
