THE MYSTERY OF FLIGHT 587
(The FBI Will Never Find the Terrorist Who Caused the Crash)
The Phoney War in Afghanistan (Part 5)
"A Scientific Analysis of the Events Causing the Crash"
(BJNews, November 15, 2001) On Monday, November 12, 2001 American Airlines Airbus A300 Flight 587 crashed and burned, just two minutes and 24 seconds after take off from JFK International Airport in New York City. Within minutes the speculation for the cause ran from aircraft failure to terrorist attack. Immediately, both the FBI and the NTSB began a formal investigation. The NTSB was in charge of investigating the crash and the FBI would take over if evidence of sabotage were found. So far, the investigators have eliminated a number of possible theories, such as birds damaging the engines, simple engine failure, or possible bomb or missile attacks.

Cheap 1970's engineering coupled with a pilot's over controlling the rudder in a (n unnecessary) reaction to wake turbulence caused the accident.

1970's airliners are renowned for their pieces falling off (e.g. DC-10) and all airplanes are normally treated by the pilots more gingerly than the general public is aware. (They're not made of reinforced concrete, after all.)

The problem that caused the incident was a known control problem with the plane. The rudder of the A300 was known to be "sporty" which is why there is still a legal battle between Airbus and American as to fault (Did American not train their pilots right, or is the system too uncontrollable?).

Why does everyone want to look for a conspiracy! This was simple:
Wake turbulence (flying too close to another heavy aircraft.
Extreme rudder input in reaction to the wake turbulence.

Show me some evidence it was terrorist-
Show me some claim from a terrorist organization they caused this. You know how these groups act. They would certainly not miss an opportunity to show-boat their latest project that killed women and children..

Don't give into the conspiracy theorists.. Use a cool head and logic.

The lesson you need to learn is that you should not believe anything you hear about aviation which is written by journalists who have no professional knowledge of the subject.

As other answers have pointed out, the investigations were completed and published - try reading them, although you may find them somewhat challenging, as they contain extensive technical information.

Imagine how much you could accomplish if you spent your time on something meaningful instead of searching for conspiracy where none exists.
