That is why they have to be specially disposed of like lithium batteries. Many places will "wipe" the memories and refit them for those in need.

You're absolutely right that they do contain elements that are harmful to the environment. The sad part is that most end up in dumps with no chance of having their parts recycled. In Britain there is a great website that accepts old computer parts whether they're in working order or not. Some are given to third world countries to be used in schools, others are taken apart and refurbished so they're used for as long as possible.

Electronic heaven.

Or, better yet, battery materials can be recycled and old computer parts can be dontated to places like Freegeek.org Most materials in electronics are recyclable. Places like Staples and Best Buy have places where you can drop off cell phones for recycling. This is a good deal for them because some of those materials are in demand.

computers can be donated to poor children without one - they wont care if its a little out of date.....
and mobile phone you donate to shelters because even if they have no service they can still dial 911..... abused and battered women use them.
otherwise i guess they go to junkyard heaven.

If they have been good they go to Electronic Heaven and if they have been bad, they are recycled. Sort of like the idea of reincarnation. Ahooommm.
