The original movie was inspired by Ed Gein from WI. He was a serial killer. The film was not marketed by any of the big film companies. So, the company that did promote it stated on all of trailers and posters, "Based on a true story." It worked, and many people saw the movie and believed it to be true. There has never been a record of a killing in Texas by a chainsaw, ever.
