for me it would have to be John the Baptist. he knew the path the Lord had chosen for him and he lived his life as God wanted.
imagine---being the forerunner---the announcer of Jesus! i can't imagine a more exalted role for a human to play, unless it would be the role of Mary, the mother of Jesus.
perhaps 'exalted' isn't the right word for John's role in Jesus' life. perhaps important or pivotal would be more appropriate. John's message was simple---The Lord is coming! Get ready! Clean your lives up! Repent and believe! The Lord is coming!
and the humility he showed towards Christ when Jesus came to him to be baptized and he said "Lord, it is I who should be baptized of You!"
and when he told his followers that he was not the Messiah, another was to come, whose sandals he was not fit to tie! Wow, what a message.
what a lucky man he was!
John the Baptist for me.

#1. John Paul II, we love you!!! Ok, this is the only Pope I've had until Benedict ... and JPII reached out to my generation major. I missed him when he visited Denver (sigh) ... he certainly was blessed with diplomacy, and communications.
#2. Blessed Mother Theresa. Loved her philosophy, "Eveyone wants to be big and take credit for the big stuff, but few are willing to do the little stuff to acheive greatness".
This is outside of the Holy Family: Jesus, Mary, & Joseph (luv).

My dear, before I read your final statement, my mind automatically popped up Francesco Bernardone, Francis of Assisi. Born to wealthy parents, he renounced all to follow the teachings of Christ. My second choice would be Mother Teresa!
