Coumadin is a time release pill and takes 24 hours to for full effect, doctors want you to take the medicine at the same time everyday, so talk to your doctor and decide when is the best time to take your medicine, can be in the morning or evening. Sounds like he just picked a time. If you can't take it at 5 tell your doctor when you can take it or easier to remember to take it. Been taking coumadin for 14 years now, so I know doctors can get picky if you take it at uneven times. Have a heart defect.

The reasoning for the 5 pm, is that to make sure its every 24 hours type thing if you started taking the drug at 3 pm it would have to be at 3 pm daily. Its a blood thining dug, and the levels have to remain consistant in your blood stream. Trust me i check coumadin level on my heart attack patients for a living

Your doctor feels that time is best. Ask him or her the reason. I took that drug when I had hip surgery and I didn't have that time period.
