Had a root canal on an upper molar 2 months ago. 6 weeks ago the permanent crown was put on. About three weeks ago the tooth acquired an ache, and is sensitve every time I bite on it. Still sensitive and still aches, now I am getting light headed and dizzy spells. If I avoid that area it is tolerable. My dentist refered me to another endodontist who examined me and the x-ray but couldn't find anything wrong. What can I do? Anybody have this problem?

The crown was properly fit and adjusted when put on. It was rechecked by the endodontist, and ok. I have been told that there could be a fracture in one of the roots that doesn't yet show up on an x-ray. Is that possible?

There may be an infection or abscesse in the gum adjacent to the tooth. (unlikely though).
I may be from an infection in remaining root pulp that was missed in the root canal procedure. (less likely).
It may resultant from thecrown riding too high in your head and needs adjustment. An unbalanced bite can cause all sorts of problems in the mouth that get worse over time. (most likely).
Have your teeth/mouth checked by a D.D.S. dentist that specialises in prosthetic dentistry, and have him do a complete workup. I would still bet on bite misallignment form the crown. If so, some light grinding could resolve the problem in a few days.
Dan.

Depends on the tooth. I had a root canal a few weeks ago and it was TERRIBLE! But I had another root canal and it was totally fine- no pain, nothing bad my jaw was just a bit sore from keeping my mouth open for that long. I had a tooth extracted a week ago and that was HORRIFYING!! I would have taken the root canal over that any day but the tooth couldn't be saved. If they can save your tooth w/ a root canal, but it's infected, I really think you should be on antibiotics for a few days before they do the root canal. If there is infection present, the novacaine won't be effective and that is what made mine so awful. So, root canal as long as there is no infection, or you get the infection cleared up before. Extractions leave lingering pain and complications. Root canal, if done properly, is said and done- no lingering pain excpet a sore jaw.

Even before I read your addition, I was thinking, "That sounds like a cracked tooth." Bad things happen and this is entirely possible. The most likely scenario is that the tooth was cracked all along, but the crack just wasn't visible. Finally, even though you had the crown done and all, it opened up and now you have pain and are about to lose your tooth.

I hate cracked teeth. Cracked tooth syndrome sucks. It may be the most unpredictable thing we deal with in dentistry. The worst thing is, the only way to ACTUALLY know how bad the crack is would be to take the tooth out and look at it. If it was a huge through-and-through crack, you would pat yourself on the back and say, "Wise move." If it is a relatively superficial crack that vears off to the side of the tooth, you'd say, "Oh rats, we could have saved it." An x-ray will not generally show ANYTHING with a cracked tooth, because the parts are not displaced from each other.
