Yes plant both apple and crab apple but one thing no one has mentioned. Make sure you plant the trees in a tube at least 6 feet high. I planted several apple trees on my property and the deer ate the branches on the trees and killed them before they ever had a chance to get big enough to bear fruit. I tried the repellant sprays but they did not work either.

apple trees are better than crab apple trees, but why not plant some year round food plots to attract more deer and turkeys. remember to set aside a sanctuary area for them as well, if you want to hold them on your property instead of just attracting them.

Some growers do this as the crab apple branch will act as a pollinator to the apple trees-this is the normal process now days. Vice versa is also possible. However, you may want to have an arborist either show you how or do it for you if you've never done this before.

planting apple trees is like ringing the dinner bell.

the deer and elk around my place ate my apple trees down to twigs.

And you call yourself a hunter? Shame on you.
I feed 30+ deer in my yard, but I refuse to shoot them. Even the 12-14 pointer feels safe here. I do not hunt the animals I invited to my property to eat. That's just wrong.

plant apple trees. most animals like them and if you get an urge for apples then you can pick some. you can kill two birds with one stone.
