The definition is a little tricky these days. It was originally that a motel was a 'motor hotel' so it was one story and you basically drove right up and parked outside the door to your room. It was a simple no frills cheap alternative. These days though the differences are more blurred. There are plenty of Motel 6 establishments and other motels as well that are 2 or more stories and even some with all doors on the inside (like Williams AZ). And, some motels can be just as nice as budget hotels, although hotels will generally offer more amenities.

However, the big difference still remains...price. Motels will almost always be much cheaper than hotels. I have stayed at several Motel 6 and Super 8 establishments and have always found them to be perfectly accceptable budget accomodation with all I needed for a night's stay.

A motel has rooms that you enter from outside, without going through a lobby or entering a building first. A hotel is such that you enter the building through a lobby, and enter the rooms from inside the building. Hotels are usualy a little more expensive, but not always. Here in Reno, The Casino Hotels often have reduced weekday rates, I think you can get a room at circus circus Sun. thru Thurs. for 29.95 plus tax

In the U.S.A, all the other answers are correct. In Brazil, a motel is just for sex and a hotel for everything else.
