Even Shakespeare used to do this with jokes for the common folks, sometimes in the form of "asides" where the actor spoke to the audience, ostensibly out of character.

So, like, in movies that are targetted for women, there's always a bit of Three Stooges style slapstick so their dates don't think it's a total waste of time.

In other words, it's there because the producer thinks you're stupid.

Well, if a movie was TOO serious, then the people watching it would be so depressed and sad that they would realize it soon after the movie was over....like they would say "That movie was so serious.....they could've lightened it up a bit...."......it helps even out our emotions I guess.....

It is called "comis relief" and serious movies use it to relieve tension or to just keep the movie from being too depressing.
