How about something nice and crafty, like a Play-Dough set? Or some dress-up clothes and accessories? A bead set for making bracelets/necklaces?

Get her a bank that has her favorite charachter on it or does something neat when she puts money in it. That will teach her to save money and she will have a new gadget to play with. Later you can let her take a little bit of money out and buy that toy that she keeps talking about. Make sure she gets to a certain amount before she takes out. Or get her some bubble bath and bath toys so she gets excited to take a bath, or a cool toothbrush and flavored toothpastes so she will want to brush her teeth. That way you both benefit from making everyday habits fun.

ART SUPPLIES. As a mom, I know how quickly they go through paper, crayons, markers, paints.... Those things are always appreciated and needed. Or, you could get him/her an art or science activity kit. One more great idea is this (if you live some place warm... they can't send the catapillers though the mail during the winter months to a cold state.) My daughter got it for her birthday and LOVED watching the catapillers turn into butterflies. It was fun for everyone in our family! http://www.farmgoodsforkids.com/c4484-butterfly-garden-habitat.html

A "dress up trunk" with dress up clothes if she's at all into tht (and most kids are at that age, either gender!). They have one that is Disney Princess and comes with costumes and the trunk for $20-30 or you can buy stuff separate and make her one.

Some pattern blocks (search macys dot com for "pattern blocks")... fun and educational and nice to look at.

Some wooden "cutting" food for her kitchen (search cutting food at macy's)

A wooden train set (that she puts together)

Macy's also has a dance DVD that comes with little one-size-fits-all tap shoes to teach them how to tap.

A pirate ship playset!

Alphabet wooden puzzles, alphabet magnet sets.

Anything that inspires creativity, learning, or ideally both!

Don't limit yourself to "gender specific" toys. We have 3.5 year old girly girl who also loves trains, and monsters, pirates, and trucks as well as Dora and babies and dollhouse stuff.

No, I don't work for Macy's or anything... I just happened to find cool stuff there yesterday while shopping for our 3.5 year old girl!

Does she have Sesame Street pre-school software programs?

I prefer to get educational toys, even building toys. I am sure she'd love Lincoln Logs
