Maybe it would be better to find out who in the US has Phd's and ask/survey them on their beliefs.

In other words, how many Phd's are atheists? You could probably get a fair idea by surveying a diverse population (say 2000 or so) and see what % of them are atheists.

Did George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, John Adams, Ben Franklin and Abe Lincoln have Phd's? Probably not. So what difference does it make? A Phd is basically a certificate that says you studied enough to be well versed in your field, and completed the work needed to attain the Phd. It's not an indicator of how smart you are about everything, just that specific area. Do all christians have Phd's? Probably not.

It is not the level of education that differentiates the closed-mind from the open-mind. It is the level of excitement generated from curiosity about the world and the universe that opens the mind to new and unusual ideas and personal creativity. And why do I say this?

I have met many closed-minded fundamentalists from all religions. I have also met many closed-minded PhDs - some who look upon Einstein as their personal bible. In both cases, you are put into a position of not being able to question. Once questioning is summarily cut off at the knees, you are facing the closed-minded.

I don't even have a bachelors degree, but I am very self-taught, and have worked with quite a few PhDs who I think respected my level of education. I'm married to a PhD now. Education is very important to her, and she seems to think I have enough. :) She is insisting that our daughter expect to get a Ph.D. I'm fine with that, but all I really require is that she learn that she is own best teacher.
