My cat fell out of the loft the end of 9/06 after having a stroke, his hind legs are paralyzed and now he has sores and raw skin that is infected. The vet took all the maggots off and I have been washing him 2x daily but he's not getting better, and he smells. Hubby and I are coming to terms with having to put him to sleep but I can't seem to feel good about that decision in my heart. How do I know that his fate lays in my hands. I am so sad and need support from someone anyone. He's not eating, just drinking H2O. He wants to get out of the laundry bin I've had him in so he doesn't get dirt or bugs in his wounds. If I'm gonna put him to sleep tomorrow what does it matter if he enjoys his last day outside in his own environment? Why isn't he healing or eating? I will miss him so much! I don't want to let him go! I'm not ready and I know he still has a lot of life in him, just not his legs. Aren't there any holistic vets that know what to do, to get him better? Please Help!

pink9364: I've been to a Vet ER on 9/30 they said he had 3 days to live and that if I were to pay them an upfront fee of $1400+ and the remainder at discharge they would do more tests. I've seen my Vet multiple times since then for shots and meds, etc. I am sickened by all of them it seems money talks and animals' whose folks aren't rich can't save them. Sorry for Ltd info. ran out of space.

It is a tough decision to make. If you know you will be euthanizing him then he could be outside for that last day if he cannot get away somewhere you cannot find him. When I had to euthanize my Spookie I too wanted him to have a last day in the warm sunshine in the garden - he was just too sick to enjoy it though and I went immediately to the vet in the morning when I knew he was having so much trouble breathing instead of 5:30 when the procedure was planned.
It really sounds as if his quality of life is just about nil and it is time for you to end his suffering. It is a very hard thing to do and I have never regretted doing it for Spookie, though even after three years I can mourn for him and miss him so much.
It is just something you have to do and I feel it is somewhat selfish if you don't take care of it now.
You can give him a 30C pill of Arnica three times a day for pain. You will get that at a homeopathic pharmacy. This will not make him "better" as he is clearly dying and it would relieve any pain he might be experiencing.
I would strongly recommend that you get some Rescue Remedy from a health foods store to give him emotional ease at his passing. You just put three or four drops of that on his fur several times a day. It cannot harm him in any way and it is also good for you to put a three or four drops in some filtered water and sip that throughout the day. It will make it easier for both of you to see him peacefully through the end.
No one is every "ready" to lose a beloved cat. Many people have shared this awful experience with you and it is inevitable as our cats cannot live as long as we do.

Honey - it is the only thing in this world that we can humanely do. It is not a matter of living with the decision - it is a matter of knowing in your heart that he/she was in YOUR arms for his last moment. It isnt just a matter of having a lot of life left in him, sometimes the loss of the legs can be a huge problem for the animal to adjust to. They have a way of letting you know, and when he looks at you in that way - the only choice is to help him each and every way that you can. i know, it is not an easy thing to go through - and my heart truly goes out to you for I have been through it a lot. But think about the lil'one who wants nothing from you but your love - and this is the ultimate way of giving him the ultimate love - letting him go on, and be healthy and happy. I am sure you will follow your heart and help your cat the best way that you can.

Sad as it sounds, he seems to be in a pretty bad way, and there is probably nothing that anybody can do for him. What did your vet recommend?
If he is to be put down, then indeed there is no need to keep him in the laundry bin. Just let him do what he wants to do on his last day.
And if you do have to put him down, just console yourself with the thought that you did your best for him, even when that meant taking his life in the most humane way.
Best wishes.

My heart goes out to you. But, knowing how much you love your pet, you know what you have to do. I know that you don't want your cat to suffer any longer. It is not right to him to keep him alive if he is in pain. The best thing you can do for him is let him go as hard as it is. I just went through that this past summer. I still have 7 dogs and 1 cat and will face each one of them when their time comes. Do what you feel you must. Be strong for him.

I am SO SORRY!!!!!!!!!! It sounds like you need to find another vet. There is something they can do for him. It is a good sign that he is drinking the H2O.....try giving him baby food. Gerber kind, chicken or veal. No kibbles or other cat food. And keep giving him lots of love. Try not to feel so sad around him he can sense that.
Again, I am so sorry. I don't know what I would do with out my babies.

Hey I'm sorry to hear that, The best thing for you and your Cat is to have him put down, I'm not being nasty, but for you and especially your cat's sake it's better to end his suffering it's not fair to keep him alive, do the right thing
I know what it's like to lose a cat, I was heartbroken when I lost mine she did,nt die, I just lost her,

Please find it in your heart to do the right thing and end your cats suffering. He will always love you for making the right decision. Just think he won't suffer anymore pain from what he is going through. Loving is not letting anything suffer in pain. Good luck with your decision.

omg that's awful.....i wouldn't know what to do if my cat mojo was like that.... try talking to your vet about letting your cat stay there for a night or two so they can figure out what's wrong with him.....ask if you can give an alternative food diet to help get him back in shape or if there was any surgey or exercises you can do to make him heal better...i'm so sorry i hope he heals up!
***keep me posted on how your cat is doing

maybe if you bring him to a animal hospital the vet can proscribe medications. I understand that you might want to have him die with you than to be put too sleep. but if the animal is suffering too much the doctor might want you to do it. but if you do want him to stay alive try to comfort him as much as possible. dont make him feel different just because he is sick.
