This is the only question that stumped the nutty professor at the school my husband was attending.

well, lets see, i've been a electrician and technicion for 20 yr's, and i think they are just there cosmetic purpose or weight or just cuz they just felt like putting them there...
the first awnser is totally wrong. it is not there to control current (amp) flow.
it is possible to put a small lock for control purposes..
but i think its got a lot to do with material cost thing???

It's where the pin goes through to hold the blade in place during the manufacturing process, although some people use it to put a small padlock on and keep the appliance from being used.

I believe it's just to cut down on the materials cost for the supplier. Note that some prongs don't have these holes!
