"Peanuts are the seeds of an annual legume, which grows close to the ground and produces its fruit below the soil surface." Not my words, but those of the American Peanut Council website.
As it's high in protein, it makes an excellent (and cheap) substitute for meat. A South African groundnut stew, a peanut butter sandwich, or Peruvian ocopa (potatoes in a spicy peanut gravy) are all excellent meals for those on a budget.

Lots of nutrients in peanut butter. Protein comes to mind right now. My cousin lived on peanut butter sandwiches when he went to college. And I mean that's all he ate , for about 1/2 a month each and every month. The Dr said he was very healthy.

Although a nut in the culinary sense, in the botanical sense the fruit of the peanut is a woody, indehiscent legume or pod and not technically a nut.
Peanuts are also known as earthnuts, goobers, goober peas, pindas, jack nuts, pinders, manila nuts and monkey nuts (the last of these is often used to mean the entire pod, not just the seeds).

A peanut is a legume like peas and beans. If you are asking what it's nutritional value is, it is high in protein so it can be a meat substitute but it is in the fruits and vegetables category.

peanuts would be considered the meat/protien group b/c peanuts are high in protien..did you know that "IF" you were stranded on an island with only a jar of peanuts, you could survive by eating one a day..by the time you got off that island, you would either love them or hate them..(ODD) but the meat group is only my guess..
