You obviously know that each couple is different. Some of them are together for years before getting engaged while others for only a few months. I believe younger couples should take their time and make sure they are not making a poor choice. Older couples with a little more experience will recognize their soul mate a lot quicker and get engaged right away.

There is no right or wrong answer to this question, nor is there a standard. I have been married 2 months and one day. I met my husband March 5, 2006. We were engaged May 26, 2006. And we wed August 14. We both knew the moment we met we would be together forever. We did not want to waste anytime with standards or norms, so we just planned our dream wedding. Neither one of us have ever been impetuous people or hasty, so our very traditional families even set aside their views and opened their arms to both of us. We are both 25. This is the happiest we have ever been. If you are 100% in love and mature enough, why wait? Go ahead and let love rule!

I really think a year should be the minimum for a young couple. We change so much in our 20s that we need at least a year to really know one another.
However, my parents got married in their 20s and only dated for 3 months before getting engaged, and my fiance's parents got engaged after only a few weeks of dating. My parents were together for 15 years (my father passed away), and my fiance's parents have been together for arond 22 and counting.

My husband and I knew each other our entire lives, but we were only "together" for a few months before we got engaged. When it's right, it's right! But, I do agree that there shoudn't be any rush. You need to experience each other in all of life's situations and circumstances. Do you know how your significant other handles illness or stress? Do you know how they handle money over the long term? How do they treat your parents? his/her own parents? How they they handle criticism? Have they shared their philosophy about parenting, and does it match yours? Lots of things to consider. Trust me, everyday doesn't feel like paradise or a honeymoon. And, do NOT overlook things that appear small, and say that "they'll change" or "it's no big deal" Small annoyances or issues have a way of becoming big issues. Deal with them now, and if it can't be resolved, give the relationship some serious thought. And all this coming from a girl who's only been married for 6 months! Good Luck!

At least one year.
When we date, we tend to hide some of the more unpleasant parts of our nature. Once you've been together for a year, you begin to relax and you begin to really get to know your partner.
I also believe the engagement should last for at least one year if not two. The reason for this is that the 'honeymoon' phase of a relationship usually lasts for about 2 years. I don't recommend anyone getting married before knowing each other for 2 years because at that point is when you start acting like who you truly are with that person and vice versa. At that point is when you begin to know if it will really work out.
Personally, I'd need to be dating someone for 3 years or more before deciding to tie the knot.

I would say that the length of time together before getting engaged shouldn't matter. My husband and I were only together for 6 months, but we wanted that commitment. We remained engaged for 8 years before we were actually ready to tie the knot. If you two want the commitment I say go ahead. Just don't rush the wedding that's all.

I honestly believe that a couple who is in there early to mid 20's is a tad young because these days we have more to experiance out of life. However, 2 years is a good time to get engaged

I've been with the one I am with for 4 years now, and we're still not engaged. His grandfather dated his grandmother for two weeks before proposing and were happily married till the day he died. I think its based on what you feel, get to know the person well, which can take decades or moments. When you feel comfortable, that is the time.
