I haven't had the chance to go yet, but I hear GREAT things about Magnolia's. They are somewhere out towards El Cajon.
I do like Chateau Orleans, it's on Turquoise St. in Pacific Beach. They have live music most nights too. I will warn you, the parking sucks! But the food is totally worth it. And a few doors down from them, there is a little bakery called The French Gourmet that serves wonderful deserts!
Don't bother with Red Fish in downtown San Diego. The food was just over spiced and burnt! Yuck!!!
God, I can't wait to back to New Orleans!!!

Hey Ms. Nita,
One of my favorites, and its not just because of the food - The Owners are GREAT! : MAGNOLIA'S
It's at Market & Euclid Ave.(In the Marketplace Shopping Center) Southeast San Diego (15 Frwy & 94 Frwy)
In San Diego, it's as authentic as you are going to get! The prices for some entrees are a little high - this is Southern Cooking! They do have some Soul Dishes (I would call Bessie Johnson or one of her staff if you are looking for something specific - they try to please EVERYONE!)
They are open late most nights - I think that they are closed on Mondays or at least earlier on Sundays.
I know, this is not Chicago Soul Food - But you will leave there needing to wipe the smirk off of everyone else's face who proclaims that they have Down Home Southern Food!
You won't be dissapointed!

Try Bonnie Jean's in Oak Park, off the 94 and Euclid. The address is 1964 54th St. Not a fancy place, but the food is terrific.

I have had soul food in various states but good is hard to find. I would say at the moment: Chicago, Down South such as Louisiana,Alabama,(there's to many to name),and once it's up and running full bore... Wonderful New Orleans! You no what? When they are finished building N. O. it really will be: NEW ORLEANS!!
