Most vets only cost $40.00 for a visit; you can try to place the dog on a bland diet.
At one time or another every dog has a bout of vomiting or diarrhea. Usually they have eaten something disagreeable, eaten too much, too fast or exercised too soon after eating, are overly excited or nervous, or their body is reacting to any of a number of other non-serious conditions.
If your dog is not showing other signs of illness, you can save yourself a trip to the vet if you wait 12 hours and do the following:
1.Take away all food and water so that the irritated intestinal tract can settle down. Nothing makes a vomiting dog vomit more than a big drink of water or a large meal. You may allow the dog to drink very small amounts, and in this short time, if your dog is otherwise healthy, you do not have to worry about dehydration. If the diarrhea resolves, after 24 hours, you may give your dog very small amounts of a bland food, such as drained, cooked hamburger mixed with an equal amount of cooked rice.
2.Observe your dog closely. Is behavior and activity otherwise normal? Think about and try to identify the cause of the problem. Could your dog have eaten something (like grass, garbage, or a dead animal) that upset its digestive system? Has your dog been wormed lately? Watch how your dog vomits or eliminates so you can describe it to your vet if symptoms persist. Examine the stool or vomit. Collect samples if you believe you will need to take your dog in. Monitor the dog's weight for possible weight loss.

Take a stool sample to the vet. A fecal float costs about 10-15 bucks and you'll know if the dog has a parasite or bacterial infection. If that's the case, you should be able to get meds for less than $25. If the dog is not infested with anything and has the runs because of too much rawhide, you can get some Imodium from the drugstore and give him 1/2 of a chewable tablet.

At the shelter if a dog had diarrhea we would not give them food for 24 hour(to let his stomach settle) then the next day we would give a small meal of white rice, if that stayed down(no vomiting or diarrhea) we would mix 1/2 rice with 1/2 dog food in a small meal again. If everythings all good we would repete the 1/2 rice 1/2 dog food for a couple days and slowly increase the amount of food until your no longer adding rice. Good luck!

Another really good way to help a pet's upset stomach is to put a little of bit of pumpkin in their food. I know it might sound weird but when i was working with a animal organization the litter of kittens I was taking care of were having a hard time switching food brands. You can buy pumpkin at your local grocery store (make sure not to buy the spiced filling for pumpkin pie) and just put about a teaspoon into their food. Dogs should have a mixture of both wet and dry food, so try putting the pumpkin in their wet food. If it doesn't get better in a few days, don't hesitate to take your dog to a vet. It is hard to tell when an animal is really sick so it is always best to get a second opinion. Best of luck!

The bigger question is why does it have the runs. Is it from overeating? If so, then fast the dog on water for two days. If it seems to have something that has upset it's stomach, then fast for 2 days on water. If it is just a bit nervous and easily upset try feeding it cooked , lean ground beef mixed with cottage cheese and white rice in small amounts three or four times a day for a week. If all that fails, it's vet time.

Cut out your dogs normal food and put the dog on a broiled chicken and rice diet until you bring it under control. The rice is highly digestible and so as the chicken as a source of protein. I have some vets tell me to use Immodium but I choose to use the Pechtilin from the pet stores (it works great). Pet Smart and Petco sell it for around $8.00. But i have used the Immodium when I could not get to the pet store. Keep you dog on the chicken and rice until the stool hardens and then gradually start putting her normal food back in. The vets also told me you can use ground hamburger instead of the chicken. Just keep the diet very blan so the stomach settles down.

You don't say the cause or how long it has been going on. Dose the dog with Bentonite colloidal suspension from a health food store. It's not expensive, and you can give him as much as you like. Many human medicines can be harmful or deadly to dogs, but this will not harm him no matter how much you give, as it is only a fine clay suspension. It is also good for constipation.
You might also want to withold solid food for 24 hours, and give only clear liquids.

Rice water.
Cook rice with extra water and then give him the water to drink. If he won't drink the water, you can give him some rice in it as well.
This works for both dogs AND people to help bind them and stop diarrhea.

Like the earlier answer, try cheese, and if that doesn't help and it costs more money than you have and your vet won't take payments, go to www.carecredit.com and apply for a carecredit account.. i had to do this as an emergency and was approved immediately and used it for my pet emergency right away as soon as i was approved, they gave me an account number which i gave the vet and they saw my pet...good luck and diarreha can be a bad sign, i had a puppy and it had diarreha one night, the next day i went to work and when i got back from work it was dead, the vet said it died from parvo..... so you do need a vet to look at your puppy/dog whichever, please take care of this ASAP
