Just go to your local rescue centre - RSPCA or blue cross etc. They have lots that are desperate for a home.

If you live in UK,find the address of your local shelters, Cat Protection League or RSPCA and go and have a look. They have lots of cats abandoned for one reason or another. They are usually vaccinated there to avoid nasty diseases being passed to the rest of the shelter animals. The Cat Protection League will vet you to make sure you have accommodation that is suitable. Both the CPL and the RSPCA now expect donations. You can look for details on the net. They always are on the look out for good homes.Their main problem is that people tend to want kittens rather than a mature cat and these are the hardest to rehome.
If there is no shelter in your area, you could phone local vets, or put a note in a local news agent.
We have adopted several cats this way along the years and they have rewarded us with so much affection that we have never regretted it. We did not go to pet shops as the cats sold there are often in dubious condition, but our daughter did and the little female she bought proved to be an absolute darling and is gorgeous to look at, but she insists on eating on the table and creeps into beds at night.

The obvious answer is "The Cat's Protection League" who will happily allow you to adopt a nice little kitty.

My cat was adopted, it's now 16 years of age and it's the happiest
cat in the whole world; being totally in control of the home, myself and my boyfriend.

Be warned however, dogs have owners, and cats just have "staff" to look after them.

Every city has shelters - over crowded shelters....try looking them up on the internet. alot of times your local petstores allow shelters to come in and show some of the more adoptable cats they have. i also recomend looking into older ones for they are the most in need right now. i work for LOVE-A- STRAY - look for them on the website, as i am sure they will have great guidleines for you.

wat ever you do do NOT go to a pet store a cat on the street can be more helthy then one in there. if you have any friends wit a prgent cat get one from there or go to a local animal shleter but make sure you ask them why the cat is in the shelter you want him to be helthy . and make sure you choose if its indoor or outdoor. or if its a girl or a boy . those 2 steps are VERY importent. aso make sure you have a nough money for his or her shoots and t oget it fixed.

Best go to a rescue. All animals are vet checked, vaccinated and neutered before you get it. There will be no unwanted surprises regarding it's health and you will be helping a good cause, breeders and shops are BAD, they do not look after their 'stock' and are not concerned about their welfare. Give a good donation if you can, it really does go a long way. Good luck

ring the RSPCA cos they could help, or ring the "cat protection league"

so glad you want to adopt rather then by from a breeder, rescued animals need good homes as well.
good luck

steer clear of pet shops!! go to your local pound...ask them at either city hall or at the police station where the dog pound is...they also have cats there, just dying (literally) to be adopted. usually there is no fee, you'll get your kitten or cat for free. just remember, NO PET SHOPS!!! good luck!
