They probably finally got around to reading John 5:22 which states that God the Father has not judged anyone and John 8:15 in which Christ says He hasn't judged anyone. In John 12:47, Christ further says that He doesn't judge unbeliever and that He came Not to judge the world BUt to SAVE THE WORLD.
Everyone that dies goes to hell (the grave) to await either the first or the second ressurrection. No one is burning in a fiery place of torment as yet.
Since neither God nor Christ has judged, convicted, or sentenced ANYONE yet - then it must be te CHURCH who has condemned any and everyone who does not follow their misrepresentations of scripture,

Hell is eternal separation from God. It is much worse than any torture or burning imaginable. It is the total lack of love or hope. The Catholic Church has never taught the existence of limbo, though some Catholics do believe in such a place. Following is what the Catholic Church teaches regarding infants who die before they are baptized: As regards children who have died without Baptism, the Church can only entrust them to the mercy of God, as she does in her funeral rites for them. Indeed, the great mercy of God who desires that all men should be saved, and Jesus' tenderness toward children which caused him to say: "Let the children come to me, do not hinder them," allow us to hope that there is a way of salvation for children who have died without Baptism. All the more urgent is the Church's call not to prevent little children coming to Christ through the gift of holy Baptism.

I'm not really sure, but I can tell you one thing - HELL is mentioned and referenced A WHOLE LOT OF TIMES in the Bible - so it's a very real place regardless of whether you chose to believe it or not.
Don't take my word for it - look it up yourself in the Bible.
I can say that I no longer believe that there is such a place called Alaska. Does that mean that Alaska ceases to exist??
