First, I am not an engineer. each cylinder of a multi-cylinder engine work exactly the same as the cylinder in a single cylinder engine. The cylinders are connected to a common camshaft in such a way that each is in a different portion of its cycle. This way at least one cylinder is in the 'power stroke' at all times. As a result, power is provided more uniformly over time.

I'm sure actual engineers will correct any errors in this layman's understanding.
