This may sound a bit weird, but I actually took a course in positive thinking. A very long time ago. I was in about the same state as you are and my negativity influenced me each and every day. I took the course at the "Brahma Kumaris"which means Daughters of Brahma. It's not a real religion, anyway the positivity course wasn't ( I'm not a religious person so I wasn't waiting for a deity to take over my life). Brahma Kumaris is everywhere in the world so I suppose they're also in the usa. They explain a bit how your thinking works and how you can positively influence it. It's more or less a scientific approach and you don't have to convert to anything or pledge allegiance to anyone. It really helped me ( and two of my friends) out. The mere fact that you are dealing with your problem and that you acknowledge the fact that you are a negative thinker will help you on your way. Combined with the information they give you it is possible to think more positive.

Write down a list of things you are grateful -- thankful for. Take effort and time to REALLY think about it.
Here, I will get you started with my first few entries on my own personal list..............
I am thankful for :

I can see I can hear I can walk I can talk
Materially...... I have a roof over my head
I have a bed (for along time I didnt have one)
I have clothes I have friends that care
I have a mom still living I have a church
I have ..................

Just list what you do have. And take an hour to list what you are thankful for.
The next time you feel the urge to get negative, pull out your list of Thank Yous and remind yourself, you have so much to be positive about. I am NOT going to stay negative !!
hope this helps

I can't really give an answer to this I just thought I"d tell you your not alone thinking that way I do all the time, and its stopping me from getting hired as a permanant employee where I work, cause they want only very positive answers during the interview and I can't even fake it thruogh without something negative coming out of my mouth. Wish I could help you and me both.

Start by trying to catch your negativity in action. Then counteract every negative thought with a positive one. Eventually the positivity will weed out the negativity. It's a long process, but don't give up, because it does work.

A negative self-esteem will often cause someone to be negative in life. Find a way to be positive about who you are. I volunteer with Special Olympics and my church youth group. That keeps me active and helps me feel good about my life. I also keep an activity list on my frig. It includes all the activities that I do well and enjoy doing (such as backpacking, playing basketball, long distance running, etc.). I participate in one of those activities each day. It helps relieve my stress levels and builds a positive self-esteem.

i have the same problem man but i see it as being cautious and avoiding getting hurt. if you see everything as bad then when it is you arent hurt by it and when it turns out to be good then it makes you happy so its a win/win. but if you wanna be less negitave then id suggest trying to think positave if you see a drunk hobo instead of thinking "what a loser" think "atleast he is alive" just little things like that at first will help to make your outlook on like a little brighter (i know i need work too and thats what i am doing my girl is on my case a lot for being so negitave)

read the bible helps a lot. My husband came up with a good idea one time when one of our kids thought they never got anything, he took us to the very poor side of town riding around, it is amazing how much emotion you feel for the poor, not that we are rich, quite the opposite, but it gives you a whole new perspective. There are so many people that have it worse than we do and you begin to realize there is a lot we could donate and just how well off we are!!!!

Mental illness can lead to low self-esteem and lack of self-confidence. It's difficult sometimes to gain it back. Try not to dwell on the past....it destroys
