No, they actually have a rocket that blasts into space from the tower just like Thunderbirds.

The Mall was built well before the invention of the aircraft, however the flagpole theory is one I myself have heard and it would have made sense during the first and second world wars that our monarchy could have been evacuated to safety if the need arose. Therefore although it was definitely not designed as an airstrip I believe there would have been a contingency plan for the evacuation of the heads of state should England have been invaded. It may sound far fetched but in times of war the countries leaders and their protectors would have invented some rather radical plans for escape, I think this one would have been just one of many.

No. The Mall in front of Buckingham Palace was built long before aircraft (including the Harrier and helicopter) were invented. Jeez.

On balance, I think it has some truth to it. I don't think it was designed that way - long processional malls were a commonplace in european city layouts from the 18th century onwards - just look at the Champs Elysee in Paris, for example, or Unter den Linden in Berlin. But we do adapt our surroundings - and alot of planning went on during the wars - I think it is quite possible that it could be used as a landing strip- but it would have to be quite a small plane. Do you remember the advetisements when London was bidding for the 2012 olympics? They involved london landmarks being used for various olympic sports - watch this space!

The Mall was designed before planes were in existence.
It is on the map of Middlesex from 1880-1882 at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/
The Wright Brothers' first aircraft flight wasn't until 1902.
However, it is possible that The Mall could have been adapted later to make this possible.

No. The mall was designed for grandeur, not as a runway. It was built well before aircraft were a practical dream. it's possible it was modified around the war times, and that's very possible (our spies used exploding rat grenades, so a runway for the Royal family is possible).

I haven't heard of that one before, but as a pilot, & a Security expert, that rumour doesn't suprise me. One way to help substantiate the rumour would be to find out when the mall was designed & built. I would expect that such a design consideration would have been implemented in the years between WW1 & WW2.
