NO... never has that been a requirement, nor should it become one for citizenship. Though I think it makes for STRONGER citizens.
I DO strongly agree with the policy that grants legal residents, and some aliens the opportunity to serve in the military and after an a period of years to receive their citizenship.
I served with a few dozen Filipinos, two Russians, a Cuban, and an Irishman who accelerated their citizenship in that fashion.

No because everyone does not have the passion or the capability to serve in the armed forces..... if so why has not every American been required to do so. Do you think to also include Women and children?

I don’t think so. After they are citizens, they should be allowed to, but I don’t think it should be a requirement as a matter of fact it may be a danger to our military, depending on why this person is wanting citizenship. He/She may be part of a terrorist group trying to get planted in this country. The last thing we need is someone like that in the military.

It's already current policy that if a LEGAL Immigrant completes a tour of duty he/she is granted US Citizenship. Now not everyone wants to become a US citizen so forcing them to do so is wrong.

Jobs illegal aliens won't do:
ARMY
NAVY
AIR FORCE
MARINES
Why because they are too Stupid! 70% of all illegal aliens have less than a 6th grade education.
Even the anchor babies are no good to help fight the war, 50% of all immigrant high school student will drop out according to statistics. According to CNN there are currently 70 illegal aliens in the Iraq war. In 2005 the New York Times reported, 29 illegal aliens had died in the war.
These illegal alien patriots stole someone else’s Identification and Social Security numbers to joined the Army. Identity theft is a CRIME!
While America’s men and women are in Iraq and other countries dying and getting wounded and risking there lives for their country.
Illegal aliens are sitting on there couches watching Mexican T.V. and drinking Coronas and sipping Tequila.
Illegal aliens are getting their housing and medical paid for while collecting food stamps and medicare and welfare while they’re working under the table. Thanks to their brood mare girl friends they increase their incomes yearly by popping out babies like rabbits to suck up the education money!

I agree that if they want to part of our country, they should show some kind of initiative.
Maybe not military, but something that makes them work towards the goal.

It wouldn't hurt if American citizens by birth also had some form of compulsory service either. What's sauce for the goose...

maybe not the military, but it wouldn't hurt to have some sort of compulsory service as a part of the application process.

Absolutely not. Does every native born American need to serve? Nope. Better think that one through.
