As weird as this sounds, I think it's best to actually embrace the mood so you can get through it, but only if you're emotionally secure enough to handle the amped up depression. It's OK to feel the emotions, no matter what they are, just as long as you don't *react* to them. Just feel them and let them flow out of you.
And get a piece of paper and write down what you're feeling as well. However, maybe you should do that with *any* extreme emotion - it helps to get those feelings out on paper before you needlessly hurt yourself or someone else.

unfortunately, nirvana which the sadness is reflected in the sound and words of the music (very sad and lost) and the other that helps out of depression is the beatles...
