I've had my cat for three years and I've never had a problem with him pooping outside of the box. Within the last year he's been pooping on the couch in various areas and I can't get him to stop. The litter box is always clean. I don't know what to do. Please help.

I think its so sad that the first answer to your serious question is from one of the many cat haters out there on Yahoo Answers - needless to say I've voted him down and reported him! I just wish they'd all go away, because their answers can be so upsetting for cat lovers.

I would think a possible reason for your boy's problem is that, although you've no doubt scrubbed up very thoroughly after he's done his business, there's a residual scent in the fabric of the couch that you can't smell but he can - cats have an incredibly well developed sense of smell, far, far better than ours.

We have found that bicarbonate of soda in the rinsing water works well at eliminating as far as possible any residual odour. Also many home shopping catalogues do "Pet Accident Sanitary" cleaners - we have used these as well, with a good degree of success. Or your vet may be able to suggest a cleaner (if they are anything like ours they will have a nice range of pet goodies on sale to tempt you every time you visit!)

It would be a good idea to take your puss to the vet for a check up in case there is a health problem but from the tone of your question it doesn't sound as if there's likely to be.

Another thing to consider, as cats are such incredible creatures of habit - have you moved the litter tray, or is there something next to it that wasn't there before that maybe he has taken exception to?

And yet another! Have you always cleaned the litter box with the same cleaner or have you changed - or if you haven't maybe the "recipe" for your usual cleaner has changed? Again, it's down to their extremely sensitive noses, if it's a new smell he may just not like it so it might be worth experimenting with a new product or two to see if it makes any difference.

Hope you can get it sorted, good luck. (Sorry about the moan I started with, just had to get it off my chest!)

He might have something wrong. I just went through this with my female cat. She had very hard compacted stool and was straining to go. Because it hurts to go, some cats will associate the box with pain and will go elsewhere. What I did was get a new litter box and make sure it is cleaned regularly. I also changed her diet (to one that says lower pH on it), since that is often the culprit. I have also been giving her wet food in the morning since hydration also contributes to this problem. For a short period, you can give your cat a can of tuna in oil (the oil is the important part) which will help lubricate the intestines. Good luck and I hope you ignored all the mean spirited answers.

He needs attention! Have gotten a new pet in the last year?
Another cat, dog, bird or any other pet? If not - you have
changed your time spend with your cat. He is telling you -
love me - brush me - play with me.
I know - I had a cat doing the same thing - first I thought
it was an accident - I checked with the Vet when it happened again- the cat was not sick - just jealous of two cats moving in downstairs. Those cats never came in contact with my cat - but he knew they were there. My solution - just pay a bit more attention to your cat - see if that will help!

Cats do this when they are missing you. I learned when my cat did it that they think you are not with them because you don't know where they are. So they poop in the place where you'd usually be in an effort to help you find your way back home. At least that is what happened with my cat when I spent too many nights with my boyfriend. When I stopped, she stopped.

I would tell the cat good bye and find it a new home! No way that my cat would poop on my couch and get away with it. Some corner in a unused room, I can deal with that and clean it, BUT YOUR COUCH!

BYE BYE KITTY!

is the couch new, how long have you had it? have you had friends over, did they bring animals, or did they bring an animal scent and sit on your couch. and now your cat smells this and her territory has been breached. or have you been out cheating on him, did you come home with a different scent? dogs are known for their sense of smell, cats have one also....
clean the spots with ammonia, or regular soap, then a final rinse with vinegar. it should help with any lingering scent.

I am pretty sure he is mad for something you have done? Hmmm, or maybe he needs a new litter box or a new location. Or he has litter stuck somewhere.

there is a spray/solution that I use to keep my cat from scratching the furniture, so it might work. its supposed to make the area that you put the solution on unnpealing to the cat, when you cant even smell it
works pretty well for the scratching, might work for the pooping
cant say for sure though.

It could be the location of the litter box or you may need a new one. Maybe he has a problem with it. Or you could check if he has a bowel problem. I mean you never know.

has your kitty been declawed? If so, he may be getting litter stuck between his toes, which is irritating to a cat. He would then look for another place to do his business.
