I think that it's fine to help an older person across the road if they look like they need some help. I also think that the older generation isn't worried about PC, you just have to watch out for the ones who don't want to be bothered at all.

Yes I suppose it is, but I wasted half a day once being carried across the road and back, I didnt even want to cross the road in the first place, and some one lost my walking frame!!! Or stole it? Was it you???

PC shouldn't enter into it! An offer of assistance to anyone who looks like the might need it is just plain good manners, which everyone should have but very few people seems to posses.

Wait till you get old and see what you think when you need a bit of help!
If in doubt, tell the PC merchants to piss off - it's about time a few more of us did!

98% of the time, yes. If I saw someone who was having a hard time, sure I'd go up and say "Can I help you, Ma'am, I'm crossing too." Most of the time they'll appreciate it. Occasionally you get the codger who says *($& off, but rarely.

But nobody's ever said a word besides thank you when I've held doors open for them.

Ask...these are human beings not animals. If they don't want help they will say so. I personally think it is not PC to NOT offer help when you see it is needed.

Absolutely, especially when they've only stopped for breath and don't want to cross the road.
As you get older it's a bit dodgy to give up your seat in a crowded bus. You get the, 'So you think you're younger than me,' look.

Only if they are struggling to cross in a hurry and traffic is an issue. Most try to be as independent as possible. Ask if assistance is needed.

Never mind if it's PC or not - you are being helpful & courtious. Just ask first if the person wants help & don't take it personally if they say 'no.'
