I'm very optimistic, and my parents, who are Christians, are all doom and gloom.
It's the mindset. I don't have a God I can put my troubles on and ask to see me through. I have to do this on my own. You know me, and you know a good bit about my past. If I were a pessimist, I would have killed myself by now. My rosy outlook on life is what has made me a stronger person and carried me through.

I think -No-. Whether you believe or want it or not, but God loves all his children. And...atheists are also his children. If an atheist lives good, cares about other human beings, then who are we to judge? But on the other hand if you (and atheists often do) reject God as the one who created everything -such as life and also atheists- then I wonder whether you can really be optimistic. I don't believe that you'll burn in hell (as is often said) . What will happen? I don't know. Why not find out by asking God. On a quiet moment, on yourself, ask (talk to Him out loud or by yourself
Him sincerely whatever you want to know. He also knows the answer to your question much better than any human being.

Being optimistic is an emotional state so why would optimism have anything at all to do with one's religious (or non-religious) beliefs? It doesn't. Most all of the atheists I know are the most optimistic, happy, well adjusted people around.

Serious answer: atheiism is a dead end for life. There is no god, then there are no after life, no morals. A person can be optimistic, but, they are fooling themselves. If they are but a random quirk of nature, then, in the grand scheme of nature, whether they live or die, makes no difference.
Answer: whether you live or die, you can be optimistic. It matters not. You can accept your fate, life or death.
Here is the difference. Look into the eyes of your children, and tell them that their lives are meaningless. Whether they live or die makes no difference, in nature. Go ahead, I dare you! For that is the truth, if you do not believe in a creator!

The optimistic atheist and the gloomy Christian
are out of touch with the truth.
The optimistic atheist because he is denying the reality his sin and his eternity.
The gloomy Christian, because he is forgetting that Jesus' "yoke is easy and burden is light".
Good question.

I think you will find people who are optimists or pessimists across beliefs. That probably has more to do with general personality traits than chosen belief systems. I know plenty of cynics who aren't atheist.

Optimistic that religious zealots will eventually kill each other in the name of a God who commanded us not to kill each other? It's looking more likely every century.

I don't see why not. Being optimistic has nothing to do with being Christian. In fact I have known many Christians who were very pessimistic, depressingly so in fact.
