If you have an account with the bank where you take the check, you can usually deposit the check, receive cash, or deposit part of the check and receive the balance in cash. If you do not have an account, but take the check to the bank it is drawn against, they will usually cash it as long as there are sufficient funds in the account it is drawn against. You will probably pay a 'check cashing fee' in this case. If you don't have an account and the check is not drawn on the bank you take it to, you are probably out of luck.

Cash is what cashing a check is about.

If you want to deposit a check then you end up with the money in a bank account.

If you want to cash a check they hand you money. If the check is so big that they don't have the money on hand or if they don't know you and are hesitating to cash a large check that is a problem. if they want to hand you money but don't have it, ask them to get it either now or before you come back tomorrow. Most banks have several thousand in cash on hand so that is not usually a problem. If they have never seen you before and you want cash you might need to go to a bank where they know you because you have an account. Those people usually trust customers.

When you cash a cheque they give you the money straight away. They then process the cheque that is why it is called cashing a cheque. They give you their money and then they get the money off the person who wrote you the cheque.
