What color should my cats mucus plug be when it comes out? I heard that white to green is ok but pink is bad or if it smells bad. She is still snacking on food. I heard that cats go off of food or become ravenous. She is very young. Probably only a year. I rescued her from an abandoned basement. It feels like there are 4-5 kittens in her. You can see them move around when she lies down. She lost her mucous plug so how long before kittens are born? It is probably her first litter. I had another cat that ran away and had babies in a strom drain and I had to rescue them when they were a day old. I never witnessed a birth with my own eyes. And I was wondering what contractions look like? Thank you so much.

My cat cried during labor just like any woman would without pain medication. She would clench up and shake during contractions as well.
You can try to make her the perfect place for having her kittens, but a cat is going to have them where she wants. She probably already has a place in mind, as pregnant cats always seek new safe places towards the end of their pregnancy.
My cat actually climbed on my lap to have her first litter. This is extremely rare, but I got her when she was (too) young and she became severely attached to me. If your cat is a rescue, she will probably want a place she feels is hidden from everyone, like in a closet.
Just make sure that when she starts having them that she is on a towel or on something you don't mind blood getting on it. While she cleans up the majority of the mess herself (she eats it) there's nothing she can do about blood.

I've had several cats who had kittens. I don't remember about the mucus plug.....don't guess I ever noticed it. When my mama cat neared her time, I fixed a padded box in a quiet place, like a closet, and showed her where it was so she would use it for the birth. Keep her in the house or she may go off to an unsafe place to have them and you won't be able to make sure the birth goes uneventfully and the kittens are safe.
Once they get started in labor, it should go pretty quickly.....within an hour or two, all the kittens should be born. My cats were very domesticated so they never minded me or my children being right there when they were in labor. If you have other cats or dogs, she will probably not want them around however.
You will be able to see her tummy contracting and she will appear to be in some discomfort. Tho my cats usually purred the whole time.....they don't seem to have as much pain in childbirth as human mothers! Cats are normally very good and attentive mothers. She will be able to clean off the kittens herself as they are born, and may even eat the afterbirth. Just be sure to watch that the membranes are cleaned off the faces after each one is born so they can start breathing.
For the first couple of weeks, she will spend most of her time in the box with her babies. And only come out to eat or use the litter box. Feed her well during the time that she is nursing the kittens! That is essential for her to have enough milk for all of them to grow and thrive. And plenty of fresh water.....
Good luck!!

If the mucus plug has dropped, the cat can go into labour any time. Prepare a warm safe place for her to go into when the labour starts, like a kitty basket lined with newspaper or old towels. Watch her carefully, when the labour starts she will most likely stop eating and hide somewhere, so make sure the "birthing area" is accessible for her.

The best thing to do would be fix her a bed to have the little ones in a dark, quiet place. it can be a laundry basket or box with some old towels. if she is still snacking around, she will probably be a couple days. just keep an eye on here if she disappears, she will be getting ready to have them.

she will pant, circle around trying to get comforable, lie down, get up , meow, she may look for a quiet spot like a draw, closet or under a bed - some cats are stupid and have them on the floor, cement, the weirdest places I had one once who had kittens in my sons hockey bag! luckly we found them before the skates went in lol
