I had a similar issue with my MP3 player but it was my cord. It was only allowing partial data transfers. Once I replaced the cord it worked fine.

yeah sonicstage is a horrible program that doesn't work properly. just google it and you will see thousands of people having trouble with it. the main root of the problem is that Sony in their infinite wisdom decided that they don't like mp3's because they're easily shared. so they invented ATRAC which is like mp3 but contains copyright information, so you cant share the files. Fair enough. why is this relevant? when they made Sonicstage, it was designed to handle ATRAC files primarily, and better, than any other format which is why it struggles with mp3's. It will do mp3's, but it'll panic and fall over at the first opportunity, as you have identified. My advice to you would be to move on from MD (its a dead format now anyway) and get an mp3 player which will save you no end of hassle in the long run. I made the switch a year ago and never looked back.
