"Literature is not an assertion of the truth, but the making of the truth more fully real to us."-T.S. Eliot

What is your interpretation?
I see it as: we take literature, and we interpret it by our own means, to allow ourselves to better understand what it (which could ultimately be a variety of things) is.

Literature does not create truth, it only helps us to see truth as a reality. Literature is the tool that removes the cobwebs from our minds so that we may see/understand more clearly what is right in front of us. In other words, it interprets the language of truth which at first seems so incomprehensible.

The purpose of literature is to make the truth more real, to document the truth, to report upon the truth. Literature is not of itself the truth.

I don't think the Historical Buddha actually said that (i doubt you could name the scriptural text), but it does ring true. Buddhism is not that logical an animal, not everything applies in every instance. If you truly were freed, maybe you would not need to ask directions? (You could tell from the stars, or from some kind of foresight. You may just have thought to bring a map & compass...) To ask for directions IS really being independent in terms of being a grown up. You do not have to ask anyone whether asking directions is the right thing to do. ; ) Good Question, though friend, and thanks for the quote! : ) Best Wishes, Goodfella XX

It means that literature is not there to tell us what is and what isn't but rather to bring home to us that which we already know to be true and to help us remember it.

I think you are sort of right. It isn't telling us what truth is but making what we believe become more real. That's how i read it but i have no idea.
