It's British/English. A miller is someone who works in a mill to grind up grain, it's like the last names Smith and Cooper, the last name used to be the person's profession.

Miller is originally a German name - MÜLLER taken from the profession of someone who worked in a mill (Mühle) of some sort, e.g. flour mill. So Herr Müller worked in a Mühle. When the Angels and Saxons invaded and populated the British Isles the name followed and was changed several times, some variations of this name are; Mueller, Muller, Millar and MILLER. Möller and Moeller are also associated with the name MÜLLER.

If the actual last name is Miller, it is most likely English. However, if the original name was Mueller, or a variant of, it is German. Many names were misspelled by immigration officials. Trace farther back in your history to see where your ancestors were born.

miller could have been the person's occupation so they could have "taken on that name"...or Anglicized the name from another languaged foreign name that also meant miller (what they did). Sounds like they were farmers.
