You can't "Self teach" yourself Martial Arts OR gymnastics.

and that is what teachers or Instructors are there for, to TEACH you how to perform the techniques properly. because they've been there, done that; and have the time and experience to teach or pass on the knowledge through trial and error to you so YOU can be better at it.

If they make fun of you or berate you by trying learning the right way to do it then they're not anything worthy of being called a teacher or instructor to begin with.

it seems to me that you have a self confidence problem here, which Martial Arts OR Gymnastics can help you with here, again it's a learning process that is LEARNED over time, not something you have right away.

books and videos are REFERENCE material designed to give inspiration and ideas to people who've already learned to do the techniques, and provide another means to learn how to do the technique or improve upon what has already been learned.

you just have to find a local school or organization that teaches either one and start from the beginning, and train and practice to become the best you can be.

But even the best make mistakes, and that's what the whole process of learning is about, learning to do better the next time.

good luck

you're an interesting one. Jeet kune do has a portion where they fight from a ''nuetral'' stance and aikido usualy does emerge its movements from a nuetral stance but jkd probably took too long to get there for you and aikido dosen't feel like street fighting. I would have tried the same arts with that goal in mind. I would say look for jeet kune do unlimited or a krav maga or HAGANAH/FIGHT school but i honestly do not even know if that is enough for what u seek. In a real street fight ill admit even if you do not initiate the fight in a stance you do look to get into one. Honestly aikido moves shouldn't need the stance they should work before you need to get into that stance. Maybe you need to look at reality based syestems someone mentioned defendu that sounds like somthing interesting. When your martial arts are at a certain level then the stance nd all that can be broken away slowly but a techer will usualy teach the bases like that. Look for a school with a lot of reality based sparring that also teaches self defence from both armed and disarmed attackers. Im sorry but that is all i got.

What makes you think teachers will make fun of you? Martial arts teachers, in general, are professional. They don't expect you to walk in knowing anything. They've had obese people, clumsy people, handicapped people, etc... walk in for classes. You'll be fine.

It would help if you got in shape a little by jogging and stretching and pushups, but not completely necessary.

well, if you dont know these arts yourself, you should go to a school. Most teachers are very willing to help you and they will not make fun of you trying. You dont want to watch a lot of matrial arts movies and think you know the moves and go outside and get beat up... LOL

You can't really teach yourself. A martial art teacher shouldn't laugh at you. They would know that you are just a beginner and have not had any martial arts before. If they do laugh they are not a very good trainer.

You cannot teach yourself. You need to recieve training from a good teacher.
Teaching yourself can be dangerous and fruitless.
Certainly you could famalirize yourself with terminology and basic body positions but you need to find a place to teach you.
