The biblical answer comes from the book of Ezekiel: "Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. They were haughty and did detestable things before Me. Therefore I did away with them as you have seen" (Ezekiel 16:49-50) Ironically, it never mentions homosexuality.

The scientific reasoning is by far different. It has been surmised that Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed by a fire which started during an earthquake in which the bitumen (a petroleum-based substance) deposits native to the area were forced out of fault lines on the ground and rained down on the two cities, starting a huge fire that destroyed both of them.

Actually there is not evidence for any form of transgression that may have been the cause for God destroying Sodom and Gomorrah. In fact, it may have been a terrible accident. There are a lot of natural gas deposits in that area, and that spot is famous for high concentrations of naturally occurring sulfur deposits. It's possible a sulfur deposit was ignited which in turn ignited an underground natural gas deposit. The people of the area at the time assumed, they must have had it coming for the Gods to come down on them like that.

Because the ppl that relayed the story and the ones who wrote and edited it and the translations since turned these conquered cities into something they were not. It's not unusual to turn thinking of the enemy into prejudice/evil force to help make it easier to go kill them.

Since then, Christians have fixated on the story as an excuse to the sanctify their ignorant prejudice of homosexuality. Lol, they disregard much in the Bible but seem to hang on to this particular one for some secular reason. It certainly is not consistent with Christ's teachings or the 10 commandments.

SODOM AND GOMORRAH DESPISE GOVERNMENT

[ UNLAWFUL TO THE LAW OF GOD AND THE LAW OF LAND WITH MAN ].

If ten [ 10 ] righteous persons found nothing would be destroyed. Even angels did not have the right of self morals. Jude 7,8; Jude 1:7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. Jude 1:8 Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities. SODOM AND GOMORRAH MAJORITY HAD NO RESPECT FOR THE LAWS OF THE LAND. The way they treated the visiting angels is evident the had no respect for anyone. 2Pet.2:6 And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly; 2Pet.2:7 And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked: 2Pet.2:8 (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;) 2Pet. 2:9 The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished: 2Pet.2:10 But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities. THERE WILL BE A JUDGEMENT DAY: Heb.9:27; 2Cor.5:10; Rom.14:9-12; 1Cor.6:3,4 [ Judges ]; Jude 6;
Matt.10:14 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet. Matt.10:15 Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city. JUDGEMENT DAY: Matt.12:36; Philip.2:5.9-12; Acts 24:15; John 5:26-29; Dan.12:2; Psm.49:14; 104:29,30; 115:15-17; 146:3,4;

Of course. The interpretation of the events depends on your point of view.
The real story of Sodom may well have involved a mob who mistook the angels for ordinary humans. Driven by fear, suspicion, and/or hatred there intent was to humiliate, by rape, what they assumed were stranger people visiting their city. The Sodom situation has many parallels to gay-bashing today, with homophobes trying to assault gay and lesbian strangers.

God punished them and let it be a lesson to us today becouse unatural sex got to be so dominate that the men in the city even tried to molest the 3 Angels who had gone into the city. I think maybe that's what you were trying to get across and that makes it a great question!

The moral of that story is that the townspeople in Sodom were acting like @sses. Not so much due to homosexual behavior, but due to their rude and selfish behavior. In the bible they were pretty much raping anything that walked, not just men.
