Asking open-ended questions is great. Its even better to remember the answers and pick up keywords in their answer. So if you ask about his hobbies and he mentions that he likes watching TV, ask him what show he likes. When he mentions he likes watching Friends, but his sister always changes the channel, ask him about his sister.
Conversation flows and pretty soon, it doesn't matter what you talk about, as long as you've both having fun talking.
When you both seem to run out of things to say, end the conversation. The next time you talk, remember a few things he said and carry on from there.
Seeing as u like him, ask him to hang out with you. Tell him you're going to go see this really cool film just out, and he can come with if he wants.

One of the best tricks with making conversation is to ask open ended questions fopr they prompt a detailed and long answers from the other person. Also talking about extremely good and old movies ( like godfather ; shawshank redemption ) is a good idea.
Also guide conversation such that the other person shares future plans and wants/ambitions in life with you for that kind of talk usually results in bonding.

Ask him about places he's been to,
about any pets he has
What he wants to achieve in life
about his family - does he have brothers/sisters -does he get on with them?
Tv he likes, books etc
what he thinks about issues like religion, worldly issues
what he likes to eat
what he likes to do when he goes out
whether he likes/liked school and what his favourite subjects were
Basically find out all you can about what he likes doing and how life is for him.

I was thinking like i was running out of stuff to say to my girlfriend online, i was worrying about what to say when we talked but once u forget about it stuff just comes to us to talk about. Its mostly random things and we can chat for hours about it. Just dont worry and the words will come.
Take care

Just ask him random questions to help start a conversation.
For example, there is an increase in the number of squrriels in my area, lol, so I asked my crush if he noticed this increase. Then we started talking about what animal we want to be.

How about, "I am really enjoying our MSN chats and often feel I want them to go on longer, even when I can't think of any more news to tell you."
That doesn't sound too pushy or needy, but hopefully gets the message across.

i'd say - be natural...when you've run out of things to say - just say ''i gotta go now , chat to you again soon!''
and next time you'll have something fresh to say - and vice versa - it takes 2 to make a conversation!!!
as long as your enjoying it - thats the main thing!
shouldn't have to be a chore :-)

ask questions that need more than a ten word answer. The easiest way to kill a conversation is to ask a question with a one word answer like "do you like soccer" answer "no" conversation is officially DEAD!! The fact that he is talking to u means he has some intrest in you, dont fret he is probabaly just as worried about wat he is gonna say as you are...
GOOD LUCK gal..
