I saw a sign in a shop today at the wines and spirits counter that said 'If you look younger than 21, you will be asked to prove you are over 18.'

Why doesn't it just say 'if you're younger than 18, you will be asked to prove you're over 18' if the legal age is 18..... why 21?

Confusing!

It sounds silly, but the reason is because how you 'look' isn't necessarily proof of your age. They want people to understand that they will still be asked for proof of age even when they are several years above the drinking age. As you know some 18yo people look 25 and some older people actually look younger.
Around where I live the signs actually say anyone appearing to be under 35 will be asked for proof of age.

In the store where I go, they warn that if you look under 30, they will card you. But that has nothing to do with your question.
Okay, I just looked again at what you said-- if you're younger than 18, you will be asked to prove you're over 18. That makes no sense.
If the law in the area is over 21, then it should say 21. Yes, that is confusing.

The reason you are confuddled is because the sign makes no sense. There's no reason to even mention the age 18 since the legal age is 21. A simple sign stating, "Please be prepared to provide proof that you are at least 21 years old" would have sufficed.

Maybe the person who made that sign had a little to much to drink.

21 is the legal age to buy liquor.
18 is the legal age to have sex and the man not get prosecuted for statutory rape.
