Its just an instinct. My friend had two cats give birth (12 kittens in total) and her dog started producing milk and helped raise the kitties. Now they are bigger the kitties often chase her (looks funny since she is a large mutt)

It happens all the time. Some cats foster puppies. And in one case a lion fostered an antelope (or something of that nature)

There are many cases of cats and dogs mother the other species babys. And usually there is a need for this to happen in the specific cases. If you listen to newborn kittens and puppies(I have heard boith). A lot of times kittens make noises that sound like puppies and puppies sound like kittens.

Yes, its true some animals have a stronger maternal instinct than others. But there is a saying "Nature will provide". Its just plain instinct.

We got a 3week old kitten from an abusive home. We dropper adn bottle fed him while he needed it and our MALE dog would lick him and clean him. And the kitten would seek out the dog when he wanted to sleep or play. So its not just female dogs and cats.

OMG....I truthfully have an identical undertaking! How unique! purely my male canine is a boxer/airedale combination. The kitten that became abandoned is likewise a male. i think of it is so lovable too. i do no longer think of this might properly be a typical habit yet i do no longer think of that's strange. We positioned a basket interior the kitchen for the kitten, and all night long, my canine could lay next to him, picking him up by ability of the scruff of the neck to place him decrease back interior the basket. Kitty is purely too vast now to be picked up by ability of the neck-he's now very almost 5 pounds, yet now they play at the same time and sleep at the same time and are terrific buds. those 2 make for some rather lovable Kodak moments! do no longer forget to get your kitty's photos, get him examined for tom cat leukiemia and get him fixed while you're gonna shop him. ( i do no longer understand approximately your canine, yet my canine insisted that the kitty became going to stay-i did no longer have a say in it!)

Female dogs have a natural instinct to mother any animal. My dog had pups and my other female jumped right in and started licking them.

I think some female dogs are just more maternal. I don't care what anyone says--animals do have different personalities!
