Saddam was no threat to us. We invaded his country and took him into custody, with over half a million of his innocent subjects and several thousands American soldiers dying in the process, and all of it based on lies we were told by our government, lies that helped make our leaders and their friends infinitely wealthier and more powerful than they were before.
When I think about this situation, it shames me to be an American.

When a culture has lived under a certain type of government for a long, long time------------it takes much times to change things. It cannot be done over night.
Example: Afghanistan rid themselves of tyrants, the last being the Taliban. It has been such a short time, and they are letting the Taliban take over again. Democracy is not working now for people not use to it.
Khomeini took over and became a tyrant because the people were use to a tyrant----the Shah. This is one time I feel the USA backed the wrong side. Khomeini lived in France, liked the Western democracies, and was very knowledgeable about us. Iran would be in a much better position if we had not backed the Shah.

Yes he should have been left alone. As bad as he was, what we have now is worse and has the potential of becoming a nightmare by comparison. It is an interesting question you ask about why live under a tyrant. We have that same psychology brewing in America. Why do people wish to give up so much, like their freedom, to have the appearance of living in security under a strong male figure? Most dictators grab what they want, with a lot of help from other ambitious men. So, perhaps those who live under dictators didn't chose that path after all.

Suggesting that Iraqi's are in the Dark ages probably doesn't help just as suggesting that a convicted murderer should run their country. You are quick to label Blair (and I am no Blair supporter) as the village idiot whilst backing Saddam Hussian as a suitable premier...Get a small sense of perspective here please! By the way, in case you were not aware, Saddam was already a murderer before he came to this particular trial and before he even came to power. He has been a criminal since his early years after a pitiful upbringing. There are no great solutions to the Iraq problem, but reinstating Saddam is not even an option. I don't believe in capital punishment, and the trial has been something of a show-trial, but the courts have reached a decision, and frankly he would have been found guilty by anyone's standards. Can you imagine the killing spree that would ensue if he got back in power??

I do not see Hussein as anything but a tyrant and a murderer so I do no think I would use the word mighty to describe him. He sure does have a long reach though since he seems to have people in court removed from the trial one way or another. I am glad he has fallen from power and I can only hope his people show him the same mercy he showed them.

Well, what's done is done. But yes, I feel that if the people of the Middle East want democracy or a better rule or whatever, then need to attain such things through a local revolution.
I'm sure either way the US would help, but we shouldn't be forcing democracy on the middle east at the barrel of a gun.
