I don't take anything away from Rich Franklin cause he is one of the best well-rounded true fighters in UFC, but his striking ability was no where near as good as Anderson Silva's.

I don't consider it a huge upset. Anyone who fights the champ is considered an underdog, but Silva was already deemed the best current striker in the division. Even Rich in his pre-fight interviews said Silva would be his toughest competition.

Anderson Silva totally outclass Franklin in striking, and Franklin is an excellent striker. He is very well rounded and I can't wait to see Silva vs. Franklin 2.

It's an upset because Rich was the champ and Silva had only one fight in UFC. I think Rich lost mostly due to injury's sustained in UFC 58 against David Loiseau and not fighting for 7 months. The only way Rich will beat Anderson is if he takes it to the ground and gets a submission.

No not an upset Anderson Silva was going to dominate that weak American fighter from start to finish because Rich Franklin has never faced a world class striker like Anderson Silva and if Dana White knew what was best for his American fighters he wouldnt let the real "fighters" from around the world come and embarrass his extremely weak fighting oraganisation.

Unfortunately Rich looked rough, and distracted before the match, so something seemed wrong to me. Even during his inter view during the rematch of Tito and Ken, he seemed rough lookin', but he mentioned that the local physician he was under had recently released him from care, after his recovery from injury.

But he just needs to train and improve, he didn't look "hungry" for the fight nor did he seem to have the heart to go through with it, and when you lose that edge, a defeat is sure to ensue.

I'm hoping that there wasn't any dirty dealings behind it, because that's often happened when a good competitior is on top and loses (ie Franklin's distratcted demeanor before the match) in such a strange manner (it's an unfortunate suspicion, but it HAS happened before in many other sports in the past, and the UFC would be just as susceptible due to it's current popularity), because Anderson Silva is a tough competitor.

but Franklin just didn't seem to have the heart he often put in his previous matches. and I'm afraid that that was the main reason he lost, but other factors could've contributed to it as well.

I don't think that it was an upset, but I was surprised at Rich Franklin just showing up to take a beating.

He had no defense, and even less offense. I mean he didn't even make any reasonable effort to get out of the clinch! I was only surprised that Anderson beat him so definitively so quickly.

I'm glad to see it. I think Silva deserved the win and will probably stay champion for a long time... who's going to fight him with any reasonable chance of beating him??

I think Franklin's main problem was that he simply couldn't escape the Thai clinch. Franklin is a good striker but he had never had to deal with someone with the level of Muay-Thai skills that Anderson Silva has.

Franklin simply had no answer for the clinch. He was trying to muscle out and couldn't. The knees to the body are what did it. Silva lands one, I think in the liver area, and you just see the fight go out of Franklin. If you watch the fight he seems, almost, confused when he can't escape the clinch.

He looked distracted walking to the ring but he was coming off a long lay off due to the litany of injuries that he sustained in his fight David Loiseau. Loiseau wasn't himself against Swick either.

However, despite looking distracted on the way to the ring, when the fight starts Franklin seems alright. When things go really wrong is when he gets caught in the clinch. I just rewatched the fight, and Franklin is just trapped in the clinch and can't get out. Silva's throwing knees and Franklin just has no answer. No matter how tough you are you just can't take repeated knees to the body by someone with Silva's skills. Rewatching the fight Franklin was just helpless in the clinch.

As for it being an upset?

I don't know. I had picked Silva to win. The reason is that as good as Franklin is he had never fought a guy with the kind of good stand-up that Silva has.

If the challenger defeats the champ it has to classified as an upset. I hadn't seen that much of Silva, but he destroyed Chris Leben. Silva outclassed Franklin last night and gave him a serious beating. I don't know if the six month layoff for Franklin had anything to do with his performance.... I'm pretty sure we'll see a rematch in the future.

I thought it would go longer but after all that time off and Silva beating everyone else while he off that long It was bound to happen.
Franklin was DOMINATED from the start.
Oh and no upset because Silva has beat very respectable fighters. Now I know why Franklin thought he didnt deserve a title shot yet.

Franklins striking ablility is as good as silvas, just that silva was the better man last night. But, it is an upset. Although I think that Dana White would be an idiot to not give Franklin another title shot....considering that they did the same for Matt Hughes vs. B.J. Penn
