There are supposedly about 6000 next level schools for students who have finished high school in the USA. A number that is often given is that among the 6000 there are about 2000 accredited colleges and universities. Then there are a fair number of unaccredited schools.

The most famous universities in the US are the "Ivies" that is a group of eight famous private universities in the northeastern US that are the oldest, generally among the richest, and the most competitive to get into (Dartnmouth, Harvard, Brown, Yale, Columbia, Cornell, Princeton, UPenn). In addition, there are about ten more schools that are very elite. There is some argument about which schools should be considered very elite, but just about everyone would agree that Stanford, Duke, University of Chicago, and of course MIT and Caltech would be on the elite list. Other very highly respected schools are Notre Dame, Georgetown, Emory, Washington University of St Louis, Johns Hopkins, etc. Some very highly regarded public universities are University of California, Univ North Carolina, Univ Virginia, Univ Michigan, University Illinois, Miami University of Ohio, etc

The magazine US NEWS publishes an annual ranking. Without arguing about the exact order or the exact method used for these rankings, it is clear that the top 100 schools on their list are all highly respectable, excellent schools.
