i know a few of my guides names yes and their individual purpose
a spirit guide though is slightly different to a spirit guardian and i think this is what you may mean by someone who looks out for us
a spirit guide is usually with us for the purpose of mediumship development
a guardian is one who walks our path with us
both though are very special and beautiful xx

Father, Word & Holy Spirit.
I have been filled with the Spirit of Truth, who leads me into all truth. Who isn't a liar. Whose name is Holy Spirit.
Also Jesus said that no one or thing or power can take me out of God's hand. He will never leave me or forsake me.
I believe everyone is given guardian angels at birth. So I call my guardian angel, my Guardian Angel. Is always there so, I can't really discern it. Though guardian Angels call to intercede in prayer for family, friends, etc...

The Holy Spirit is your only guide. It will help you unless you turn from God. But if you are serving satan, then you have a Demon to guide you and help you in your wrong ways.

My spirit guide is my grandad i hae been told this loads of times but my mums is a red indian or (native american) not sure of the name though.
